Presentation marks completion of Rainhill station works

Merseytravel has paid tribute to the history of Rainhill Railway Station in Merseyside - following the completion of a series of works to improve access to the station.

A plaque detailing the rich history of the station, including the world famous Rainhill Trials and the emergence of steam railway across the world, now takes pride of place inside Rainhill Village Hall.

It was presented by Merseytravel`s Rail Committee Chair, Councillor Chris Blakeley and marks the completion of the access works at the station designed to improve access for people with mobility problems.

The improvements include level access to the Liverpool-bound platform, road improvements around the station, tactile paving and new blue badge parking spaces for passengers.

Merseytravel funded the £56,000 works, with a contribution from the Department for Transport`s Access For All Small Scheme Fund.

Councillor Chris Blakeley said: "Rainhill Station is famous the world over and we are delighted to remember its past, with this plaque, and to build for the future, with our access improvement works.

"Improving access to all our stations is important if we are to create a public transport network accessible to everyone."

We have had numerous complaints regarding collection failures of green waste, some have had no service for 6 weeks. The contact centre has also had 100's of enquiries from concerned residents. We have made enquiries and the dispute by the collection staff, the "bin men" is complicated in that they are trying to ensure the protection of their earnings. Whilst we cannot condone actions that cause residents annoyance, we do want to maintain the service they provide which many residents have praised in the past.

The two areas of Rainhill (above) which were deemed by the police to be "hot spots" for anti social behavior, have received extensions to their life-span until 25th November 2007. They were originally set up after numerous complaints from concerned residents living near to Martin Close. Masses of youths, many we believe from outside Rainhill, had been congregating in the area and causing huge disruption. After consultation with local residents and your councillors, the police successfully applied for the order to St Helens Council.

Initially for a six months period, the levels of anti social behavior have reduced, and we believe that with Halloween night, Bonfire night and particularly "Mischief Night" approaching, it is right to extend for this short period.

The next ward committee to be held in Rainhill is due to take place on Tuesday 30th October 2007 at 7.00pm in the Village Hall. All local residents are invited to attend, to hear the latest news on environmental improvements, and to contribute their own ideas on issues not yet covered.

One of the latest schemes to be evaluated is the drainage of the Warburton Hey playing area / grass area. This area is heavily used but prone to water retention and after heavy rainfall unusable for extended periods of time.

Rainhill still being targetted by Thieves

Over the summer and early autumn we have again been targetted by thieves. Properties in Ivy Farm Road, Danby Fold, Rainhill Road, Warrington Road, Mill Lane and Bishopdale Drive were all victims of burglars. Cars were broken into in about a dozen locations throughout the ward, unfortunately some motorists, but not all the victims, are leaving possessions on display whilst their vehicles are parked up.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCHES or HOME WATCHES are celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year, the first one in the UK was set up in the village of Mollington in Cheshire in 1982 (unless you know otherwise...!!!). If you are interested in setting up your own scheme there is help available - contact us or visit the Cop Shop in the precinct.

BONFIRE ALERT - whilst not wanting to spoil the fun of the occasion, in certain instances there is the need to avert dangerous occurrences. Bonfire material being accumulated near to property or possessions will be removed by the council, phone bulky rubbish on 01744 456789.
Mersey Fire Service have agreed a bonfire reduction strategy, and if an unofficial bonfire is burning they will respond - ring 999 and ask for the fire service.


A colleague has found a novel way to promote the party, he puts Labour stickers on everything.

But to the business, we have been given the green light to pilot a scheme for plastic recycling to evaluate its' uptake. The pilot has, in our view, been watered down by only involving about a quarter of the Rainhill properties and also by involving other areas of the borough. The residents of Rainhill clearly demonstrated that they are the KINGS OF RECYCLING in St Helens and wanted, nee demanded, the ability to do more.

The areas to be covered in Rainhill involve about 1400 houses in the north of the ward, off Rainhill Road, and the properties surrounded by Warrington Road, Holt Lane and Longton Lane. Questions about why other properties in Rainhill have not been involved remain unanswered.

"If it's a plastic bottle, then it can be recycled" is the simple message. The containers have been ordered, the leaflets for households have been printed, and the pilot scheme should be started very soon.
