Stoops Island - Latest Update

As you may well be aware, work to improve traffic flows have recently commenced. The works, to date, have required off peak traffic management to St Helens Linkway, which has minimised overall traffic inconvenience.

Towards the end of April, the work will require full time traffic management, which will inevitably cause traffic disruption and delays. The council's Engineering Section have apologised in advance for this disruption and will ensure that delays are kept to a minimum.

The expected completion of the Stoops Improvement Scheme is October 2006.

  • I've seen little evidence of any "traffic management" at Stoops Island over the past couple of days. Nor have I seen any evidence of disruption being "kept to a minimum". I queued for 50 minutes last night on the dual carriageway before finally making it on to the roundabout, only to find it in semi-grid locked mayhem. There was a similar queue this morning (fortunately, I was going the other way away from Rainhill on this occasion). Why is it as bad as this? Why are there no temporary lights in operation? Why have the lights been out for almost four weeks when there's still no work being carried out on the existing roundabout as yet (it's all in the middle at the moment)? Why have the local council allowed such a poorly planned traffic management system to be implemented? It will most certainly impact on local businesses as well as residents like myself who have to commute. Perhaps we could have some traffic police getting involved instead of spending their time trapping motorists exceeding the limit by a few MPH on the local roads? The current situation is a complete joke - and a definite vote loser.
