M62 Junction 7 Update

Many thanks to the local residents who have emailed and phoned me to enquire about the progress (or otherwise) of this major improvement project. I had stated in an earlier report that the scheme was to finish in October but hopes were high that all could be completed by the end of September. This clearly was not the case but motorists who have to pass the site on a daily basis will have noticed that not much is happening lately.

This is the up-to-date report on the situation given to me by St Helens Engineering Dept:

"Works by the main contractor, Birse Civils Ltd., are now almost complete. It is anticipated that the freeflow link from the St. Helens Linkway onto the Manchester-bound M62 will be opened to traffic on Tuesday 24th Oct. and we hope ( after a long struggle ) to get Highways Agency approval early next week to install ducts on the two M62 off-slips ( ie from Liverpool and Manchester ).
After these works, Birse will be tidying up generally and reinstating the site compound area, but all traffic management measures will be removed. Siemens will have some localised traffic signal works, including slot-cutting on the two off-slips, before all works on the overall scheme have been completed. The traffic signals will then benefit from a very efficient linked MOVA operating system.
The limits of the scheme extended slightly to incorporate resurfacing of additional areas of existing carriageway and footway, the cost of which has been contained within the original budget."

  • As someone not familiar with highway engineering I'd like more information on what ducts, slot cutting and MOVA operating systems are!
    But mainly, when will the new improved the traffic island regain the traffic lights which are currently out of action, which result in massive tail backs for people using the island?

  • Hi Anonymous, I'm not an engineer either but I believe that the slots and ducts refer to the laying of the electrical work for the MOVA system. I believe the MOVA system is devised to improve traffic flows and also to avoid tailbacks onto the motorway network from the sliproads (obviously a major safety issue), by romotely altering traffic signal times in conjunction with a camera network specifically installed to view up-to-the-minute traffic flows/hold-ups as they happen.

  • I note that the work was syill very much under way this morning: as the result of yet another lane closure there was a huge traffic jam for people joining the roundabout from the dual-carriageway (I'd estimate from much previous experience that the people in this queue - luckily for me I was going the other way - had to wait at least 40 mins to get onto the roundabout). It looks to me like this work will be on-going into early November at best. Have the contractors given you a final estimate of when ALL work will be completed? Here's hoping that it's not going to carry on for much longer, having endured countless long delays since it began in March...

    Rainhill will be a nicer place to live in once again when this is all over!

  • Can't you tell the new system is working!! 730am and the queue on Warrington Road is back to the Mill Lane Junction, instead of flowing smoothly onto the roundabout. 430pm and the queue of the westbound M62 is back onto themotorwat (thought the lights were supposed to stop this?)
    Morning ques is becasu the lights give 6seconds to move( i've timed it). More proof of the current belief that doing away with signals helps, not hinders.
