MERSEYFEST IN RAINHILL

Merseyfest is an organisation bringing together the youth of Merseyside with others from further afield. Actively sponsored by the churches and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, projects were recently completed over a week long period.

On Tuesday 16th August, a team arrived to work in Rainhill. St Benedicts Wood, on the old hospital grounds, is a well used area which had become badly overgrown and was in need of a good clear up. Along with local youth volunteers and your local councillors, a team of youth volunteers from Shropshire came to give a helping hand.

Co-ordinated and helped by a large contingent from the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, a large skip was quickly filled with rubbish and weeds. Everyone was thoroughly enjoying themselves with much banter and joking and a rare quiet period took place when the arrival of Macdonalds food was spotted. No sooner had the food arrived when a fire tender duly pulled up and everyone was given a full demonstration of the workings. Unbelievably soon after, dark plumes of smoke could be seen over the treetops and the fire team departed sirens roaring to assist.

As a finale, everone assisted in the planting of flower seeds at the entrance to the wood and we look forward to seeing them bloom in the future.

The local youths who took part worked really hard and a special thanks must go to them. Please take time out to have a walk in the wood to see their efforts.
